Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil System (ISPO) is a policy of Indonesia Government through the Ministry of Agriculture to increase the competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil in the world market. Additionally, this certification is as a proof of Indonesia President’s commitment to concern on the environmental issues. ISPO was set up in 2009 by the Indonesian government for ensuring that all palm oil plantations can fulfil the permissible farming standards. ISPO is not only about standardization, but also as an ongoing dialogue between the Indonesian government, oil palm plantation companies and other related parties. In March 2014, ISPO certified companies focused on greenhouse gas emissions as one of the main issues in sustainable oil palm plantations.

Legal Basis of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil System (ISPO)

ISPO certification uses a legal basis in the form of:

  1. Presidential Regulation Number 44 of 2020 concerning the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Plantation Certification system
  2. Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture Number 38 of 2020 concerning Certification of Sustainable Palm Oil Plantations

ISPO certification is a kind of conformity assessment activities for oil palm plantation businesses (including plantation companies and smallholders) related to guarantee the product and/or management of oil palm plantations meets ISPO principles and criteria.
