BIRD FRIENDLY COFFEE

The shade criteria for “Bird Friendly®” coffee were developed by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC) in the spirit of mutual benefit and cooperation with others involved in coffee.

Other parties involved in coffee (producers, traders, retailers, researchers, etc.) have an interest in this important aspect of sustainable coffee production. Any person or producer group who wants their coffee to be certified “Bird Friendly®” must first have an organic certificate.

In addition to the criterion that the coffee plantation must be certified as “Bird Friendly®” coffee, the processing or marketing center where this coffee is handled must be physically or temporally separated from other coffee. Separation must also take place during de-pulping, washing and drying, storage, transportation, processing and marketing; documentation must be maintained so that the separation is clear. International norms applicable to organic production governing production, processing and marketing methods must be followed and implemented by any party seeking a “Bird Friendly®” certificate. To verify compliance with the “Bird Friendly®” coffee criteria at all stages, i.e. from production to marketing, an inspection is programmed to take place once a year. If corrective action is required as a result of the inspection, supervision is carried out through unannounced inspections.
