INDONESIAN SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL (ISPO)

Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) is a policy of the Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Agriculture that aims to increase the competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil in the world market.

This certification is also proof of the commitment of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to pay attention to environmental issues. ISPO was established in 2009 by the Indonesian government to ensure that all oil palm growers meet permitted agricultural standards. ISPO is not only about certification standards, but also an ongoing dialog between the Indonesian government, palm oil plantation companies, and other relevant parties. In March 2014, ISPO certified companies focused on greenhouse gas emissions as one of the main topics in sustainable oil palm plantations.

Legal Basis of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO)

ISPO certification uses a legal basis in the form of:

  • Presidential Regulation Number 44 of 2020 concerning the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Plantation Certification system
  • Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 38 of 2020 on the Implementation of Sustainable Palm Oil Plantation Certification

ISPO Certification is a series of conformity assessment activities for oil palm plantation businesses (including Plantation Companies and Smallholders) related to providing written guarantees that the products and/or governance of oil palm plantations have met the principles and criteria of ISPO. The objectives of ISPO Certification are:

  • Ensure and improve the management and development of oil palm plantations in accordance with ISPO principles and criteria.
  • Increase the acceptability and competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil plantation products in national and international markets
  • Increase efforts to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
